根據著名的麻州男性老年化研究(Massachusetts Male Aging Study),學者追蹤950健康男性長達15年的時間,發現性腺功能低下的產生與代謝症候群有關。同樣的,根據美國疾管局舉辦的National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III)研究,發現代謝症候群、第二型糖尿病和性腺功能低下有關,即使是在非肥胖的族群上。綜合近年來的各項研究,目前學界的共識是代謝症候群與性腺功能低下是一體的兩面,兩者皆應視為整理臨床評估和治療的必備面向。
